WELCOME MODERATOR

Casey Drewett 1723
Claremont Fan Court School 64680

I worked with Ross Morrison 1748

Our brief was to make the title and opening sequence for a film. The title of our film is 'The Fugitive'. The Fugitive is a crime Thriller which explores both the effect human trafficking has on the police, the public and the traffickers themselves. Throughout our film opening we included the necessary credits and gave the audience an in sight to what characters will be the main focus of for the film to come.

Camera Work - for the majority of the filming I was in front of the camera rather than behind. However, when I was not in a shot, such as in the last shot on the bridge, I was behind the camera giving the camera man (Ross) ideas for different angles and shot types.

Editing - I participated by creating the fonts for the credits/ title, and I made so that it would suit our film genre. I also created the joint company idents for RFM FILMS and ALEXANDER PRODUCTIONS. Additionally, I imputed and approved the various sound effects and music that we put in our film opening.

Directing - Before we shot the scenes, I initiated the various places we could and did shoot our film opening. I felt the locations, in London, that we filmed at, were necessary because of the ages, jobs and storylines of each of the characters. I directed alongside Ross even when I was acting in different shots.

CONSTRUCTION: FILM IDENT

Image of me creating and editing my own film ident for RFM FILMS and ALEXANDER PRODUCTIONS using imovie

In majority of films the film companies put their company idents before the film begins. The ident is a combination of words and visuals that deliver the brand identity of the production company. Often the ident is eye catching and even witty, playing with alliteration or visual puns, to make it memorable.

RFM FILMS and ALEXANDER PRODUCTIONS are branded as two sophisticated modern companies, so the visual of a green star is a clean, stream lined image. The star has connotations of stage and screen. Below is our ident.

CONSTRUCTION: BBFC CERTIFICATE

As our film/ film opening is a British film, we created a BBFC certificate, which shows the age rating for our film. We went on the BBFC website and we looked at the requirements hat make a film age rating 15. The list below shows these requirements.

Age rating 15:
  • Dangerous behaviour - Dangerous behaviour (for example, suicide, self-harming and asphyxiation) should not dwell on detail which could be copied. Whether the depiction of easily accessible weapons is acceptable will depend on factors such as realism, context and setting.
  • Discrimination - The work as a whole must not endorse discriminatory language or behaviour, although there may be racist, homophobic or other discriminatory themes and language.
  • Language - There may be strong language. Very strong language may be permitted, depending on the manner in which it is used, who is using the language, its frequency within the work as a whole and any special contextual justification.
  • Nudity - There are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context. Sexual nudity may be permitted but strong detail is likely to be brief or presented in a comic context.
  • Sex - Sexual activity may be portrayed, but usually without strong detail. There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour. Repeated very strong references, particularly those using pornographic language, are unlikely to be acceptable. Works whose primary purpose is sexual arousal are unacceptable.
  • Sexual violence and sexual threat - There may be strong verbal references to sexual violence but any depiction of the stronger forms of sexual violence, including rape, must not be detailed or prolonged. A strong and sustained focus on sexual threat is unacceptable.
  • Threat and horror - There may be strong threat and horror. A sustained focus on sadistic threat is unlikely to be acceptable.
  • Violence - Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable. Strong sadistic violence is also unlikely to be acceptable.
From this list we created our own BBFC certificate which stated the age ratings and what subjects will be shown in our film (which is strong nudity, violence and language).

CONSTRUCTION: FILMING

Filming in London: We had to be strict with our time frame for the two days of shooting. As all our filming took place in London, we took into consideration train times (early or delayed), weather conditions, the walking distances/ times to each location and timings for breaks and lunch. By acknowledging all these factors, we were able to structure our day better as we were now more organised in dealing with these factors. We had to film on two separate days (18th and 25th January 2020) due to our actors not being free. However, it was more successful because it allowed us to focus on the actions that we wanted our actor to portray.
The hardest shot to film: was in Piccadilly Circus because there was huge amounts of traffic and it was extremely busy, nevertheless, that didn't stop us. It took over 15 takes to get the right shot for the scene, where the associate (Jake) crosses the road and the female detective (Evie) follows. The main reason it took so long was because we had to wait for cars to pass by and for the traffic lights to go red. luckily we were able to, at the end of the shot, create a transition to the next scene via the female detective (Evie) walking past a public citizen.

This was the area for this shot and this image is taken from the shot we used for our final film opening.

CONSTRUCTION: SOUND

We used premium beats to put as an underscore throughout our film opening. When we were searching we tried to narrow our search down by thinking of music genres that would be appropriate to our genre of film. The genre of our film in crime/ thriller so we didn't want to choose anything lively/ animated. At first were searched for sinister music and we felt that the tempo was too slow, so it was not matching. I initiated the next genre which was intense/ heightened music because I felt it would match the fast and intense content in the film opening. We then came across a piece of music called 'Independence', which when put under the film opening began to suit it.

For the voice over, of a report linking to the film topic, we used an iPhone recording app to record the person reporting. Alongside this we used the recording app to record dialogue said by the actors and we edited it into the film opening and match the mouth movement to the words.

CONSTRUCTION: EDITING

When we were editing for our film opening, we decided to use iMovie. However, when we were using frame effects in our film opening, like green screening a CCTV camera frame, we used FinalCutPro. We also had to add voice overs, underscore of music, sound recordings and transitions.

The image above is the beginning of our film opening, showing our two film companies idents. The green bar is the music underscore that we used (downloaded from Premium Beats). We had to cut and extend, throughout our film opening, the same music to make it last longer than the original downloaded time (which was 1 minute 30 seconds). Alongside this we made the music become more quiet when there was dialogue. For the dialogue we edited it to sound louder and we did this by recording on a iPhone recording app. We did this for the various dialogue by the actors/ characters.

This image shows the CCTV camera frame effect and where the sound effect of the the CCTV effect/ film shot is zooming in on a new character. The small top 4 green bars are the sound effects of the CCTV camera and we made the music slightly more quiet. This was so the audience could understand what they were seeing and focusing on.

CONSTRUCTION: SOCIAL MEDIA

We chose to make official social media pages to help us to distribute our film. The social media platforms that we have used are Instagram and Twitter because we know that majority of our target audience (age 15-35) use Instagram and Twitter. At the moment news outlets, film companies and music companies use these two social media platforms to distribute their products. We notices, especially with film companies, they either release a teaser trailer, individual poster or and establishing poster first before releasing the main trailer(s) and the main poster. Because of this, we decided to release the establishing poster first, then the individual poster and finally release our main poster

CONSTRUCTION: WEBSITE

To help us understand the distributions methods for films we decided to create a website. The website includes information about out product, photographs taken during filming, posters, videos and contact details. All of these we included in our website, links to our social media pages (our Instagram and Twitter account).

We created 3 posters so we can understand how to make poster be more visually appealing to our target audience. We created an establishing poster of a truck depot, which allows audiences to have a sneak peek into what is to come of the film. The second poster is an individual poster and we did this because many distributors of films post posters that only feature the main character, who is usually played by a big actor/ actress. An example of this would be for the film Ad Astra, which had 3 individual posters, which all had Brad Pitt in. The third poster is the final poster for the film and it focuses on all the main characters.

PLANNING: SHOT LIST

PLANNING: STORYBOARD

PLANNING: LOCATIONS

We made a mind map showing the different location that we wanted to use. we felt that London was a very good place to film because of the diversity in building, streets and general public.

We decided to go to London to take some photos of the locations that we are going to use. by doing this it made it easier for us to begin knowing what shot types, camera movements and angles we were going to use.

These photos were taken beside Charing Cross station and before the Charing Cross bridge. we felt that this would be a very good place to film the 'meeting scene' and part of the chase scene.

PLANNING: CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

To help develop our characters, we decided to hot seat/ interview the actors playing these characters. We were inspired by an article written by Charlie Sierra, on the Film Escape website, about building a back story to different film character. This allowed us, as directors and producers, and the actors themselves to find deeper stories for their character. We created a series of questions that were necessary to ask to each of the individual actors.

When we recorded the interview we decided to make it into and audio presentation, which includes visual pictures of the actor who is speaking.

Below shoes the questions asked in black and the answer given by actors in red.
